365 Vintage Days: Inspector Palmu

One of the best known Finnish novellist is Mika Waltari, who wrote the world famous Sinuhe the Egyptian. Mika Waltari also wrote tens of wonderful novels, many of them with a great historical background (such as Sinuhe) but also many with strong ties to the Finnish society of the first half of the twentieth century and to Helsinki. Mika Waltari was the first to write a Finnish detective story with Inspector Palmu’s creation in 1939. Mika Waltari wrote three novels involving Inspector Palmu, all sited in Helsinki. All three novels later served as the base of popular movies by Finnish Director Matti Kassila in the 1950’s. Kassila also made a fourth Inspector Palmu movies, which was not based on a novel by Mika Waltari.

A couple of weeks ago I joined a group of vintage movie enthusiasts in a tour of the Inspector Palmu’s film locations in Helsinki: the police station where Palmu worked (which was indeed a real police station at the time), the house where he lived, the houses where a number of characters – murderers and victims – lived and the former location of the main movie studios. That was a really great tour, with good stories told by experts. And a perfect weather.

I was wearing a circle skirt with a print of winter trees, in grey, green, dark red, black and white. I paired it with a green blouse, dark red sandals, purse and belt. I also had a gold tone charm bracelet and gold loop earrings.

I purchased this skirt from a friend last fall, at the vintage flea market of the Oilers motorcycle club. The blouse is from Boss vintage, at the Viva Las Vegas weekender a couple of years ago. The charm bracelet is from a small antique mall in Lincoln City on the Oregon coast. The purse is from Sweden and the wedges from the US. The gold loop earrings were custom made for me.

365 Vintage Days

365 vintage days was a bet and a challenge. From March 2011 to March 2012, during 365 days, I published every day a new post with a different vintage outfit and had you witnessing the challenge. I have been buying and wearing 50’s clothing and accessories – most of it casual - for more than twenty years and I am still doing so. This blog now continues ...
